João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil

Although about 800,000 inhabitants live in the city of João Pessoa, it is calm and has a rather high level of life. João Pessoa is the first place that sees the Sun of the Americas rises and is the second greenest city in the world, only behind Paris. João Pessoa has kilometres of urban beaches, but furthermore, just a few minutes away from the city, going northwards or southwards, we can still find some nearly untouched beaches. Peace and tranquillity just a few minutes away from the bustle of the city for whoever who looks for it.

The journalist from the newspaper Folha, Pedro Carrilho, who was not born in Paraíba describes João Pessoa saying:

The Sun that shines intensely all through the year is the same one. And so is the breeze that blows from the sea and keeps the strong heat down. And it is the same with the wide range of green and blue tones coming from the omnipresent Atlantic ocean.
Smaller and less famous than Natal (RN) and Recife (PE), the capital of Paraíba has all that is expected from a coastal town of the North East, but it has stood itself out in these last years for its tranquillity and safety which some of its neighbouring towns have already run out of.
Its beaches and historical attractions receive more and more tourists, but the calmness still overcomes the uncontrolled growth that predominates most of the coastal towns of the country.
We do not run short of superlatives here. Located in the east end of the Americas, where the sun rises earlier and where Brazil gets nearer the African continent, João Pessoa is seen as one of the greenest cities in the country. What is more, it is the third oldest city in Brazil, which is obvious when you see the historical centre of the city showing a small but well preserved jewel of colonial architecture.
The attractions in the city have that kind of unexplored thing and this may be one of the greatest fascinations for a ticket to João Pessoa.
The city is still proud to have some of the most beautiful urban beaches in the country, such as Tambaú and Cabo Branco, you do not have to go far away to see desert sands.
The gastronomy there, based on the regional cooking and the abundance of the ocean, is another point of emphasis. And as if it were not enough, the new architectural Project by Oscar Niemeyer, the Cabo Branco Science, Art and Culture Station was inaugurated earlier this year.
